More private universities courting community college transfers

In light of the present state of the economy and in the interest of making their colleges more balanced demographically, Private Universities are admitting more and more transfer students. Budget cuts at public universities, the usual targets for transfers, have meant limited admission for students coming out of community colleges. As a result, more applicants have turned to private universities, and the universities are responding. As the University of California puts it, admitting more transfer students has helped “selective privates with their diversity”. USC is in a group with schools like NYU and Amherst, who have hired people to specifically recruit qualified community college students. Smaller institutions have also used transfers as a way of meeting tuition goals that are difficult to reach in such a sparse economy.

Turning to YouTube for an Application

As more and more kids apply to college, universities are looking for better ways to see what kind of applicants are interested. Recently, Tufts University, known for its unique personal statements in the past, offered applicants with the opportunity to make YouTube videos that could tell the officers something that applicants thought wouldn’t translate to paper. The videos ranged from engineering students showing off their inventions, to a girl who likes both dancing and math that performs different kinds of graphs. The videos provided Tufts with extra insight into the kids trying to get into their school. Tufts is one of many schools that continues to find more and more ways to be more discerning in the application process.

More information on the Tufts YouTube portion of the application can be found in this article here: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/23/education/23tufts.html?emc=eta1
